More Deceiptful Practices

In previous blog post dated 4/28/2014, we informed Cedar Run homeowners about Robert Sher's business practices and reputation in the apartment leasing business, under the 'My Place Apartments' moniker.  (Feel free to read that post HERE).  We showed you how Sher's takeover and management of Cedar Run align perfectly with his deceptive, predatory advertising & business practices.

After a few google searches and some amateur detective work, we've learned of the Sher/Shaw family's new strategy.....try and ditch the old reputation, and appear as something new.
  • They've ditched the 'My Place Apartments' name and they're sticking with 'Shaw Real Estate Group Inc.'
  • They've got a new, fancy website, which makes no mention of the old name and tries to spin their business in a more positive light (unlike the old website which slammed any review site that would dare post a negative review of their business)
  • They ditched their previous Chicago office location on Lincoln Ave for a new one on Diversey Pkwy.....Actually they were EVICTED from their Lincoln Ave location (Click HERE to view the court records from the lawsuit that had them ousted).
  • They now have a new Yelp listing (because of their 'new' name and location). They've already posted fake, glowing reviews from fake user profiles on this Yelp page. (all have been flagged and removed as of the writing of this blog....nice try, Barb)
  • All of their bogus Craigslist Ads no longer mention the old business name, nor do they mention Robert Sher's name.
Why do this?  Because of one of the exact reasons mentioned in our previous post. If you google search for 'My Place Apartments SCAM', you'll get an abundance of results that warn people to stay away.  Most, if not all, of those reviews will have Robert Sher's name attached to them.  New website, new phone number, new address, no mention of the agent's (Sher's) name.....all the previous red flags may go unnoticed.

Interesting Tidbit
The most interesting fact (for those of us in Cedar Run) about this attempt to renew their reputation is the 'Condo Management' section of their website.  Click HERE and have a read.

  • Notice how they mention an abundance of services they provide, none of which we've seen in Cedar Run?
  • Notice how they refer to themselves as 'Leaders' in the industry.  [Seriously.....leaders??]
  • Notice the comment about a 'proven track record of customer satisfaction.'  [Really???]
  • Notice how they're more than happy to also be your realtor if you decide to sell? [Can you say ' conflict of interest'?]
  • Notice how they've gone from 'decades of experience' (per the old website) to five years of experience per the new website? [For the record, both Jack Shaw and Robert Sher got their Community Association Manager licenses in Oct. 2012 and Nov. 2012, respectively......how is that even five years???]
Why be concerned?
Because we, the Cedar Run Homeowners, paid for their licenses! (see check images below) We paid for multiple renewals as well.  Sher even admitted that we paid for his license, but claimed it was strictly to give him the credential required to manage Cedar Run.  Now Sher/Shaw are aggressively marketing themselves to other associations as licensed, experienced property managers. 




When Sher was soliciting votes to take over Cedar Run, he swore he had NO financial interest
 in managing Cedar Run.  Does anyone believe him???


Not only is the Sher/Shaw family on the Cedar Run Payroll for at least $60K/year, but they are using their (Cedar Run sponsored) credentials to solicit more business.  Good deal for them - bad deal for us.

What Now?
As we wait patiently for the court system to finally deliver us an election, we urge you to think about the services you've received from Sher over the past two years:
  • Have you ever seen a tree being trimmed?
  • How are the street repairs holding up? (take a drive down Spruce or Locust)
  • If you've had the unfortunate experience of having a sewer line backup, who did you call to fix it? (Outside sewer lines are a Master Board responsibility)
  • How many times have you been required to register your car for parking privileges? (we count about five)
  • How many different parking/towing/booting policies have been rolled out in the past two years, only to be scrapped and completely changed soon thereafter?  (we count about seven)
  • Have you ever been able to get documents (governing docs, disclosures, paid assessment letters, etc.) from the Sher group when trying to sell or refinance?
  • Are we truly 'self managed' even though we pay Sher/Shaw a hefty fee to manage our property??
Are all of the above (and the countless other examples we've cited on the past) signs of a well-managed association?  We think NOT!

Don't Give Up Hope
Though little has happened over the past few months, Cedar Run homeowners WILL have an opportunity to express their satisfaction/dissatisfaction of Sher through an election.  Next Court date is November 5th. We will provide an update as soon as we hear anything.  Hopefully something decisive will happen; hopefully not another continuance or more procedural games.

I SIGNED A PETITION FOR ONE......THOUGHT IT WOULD BE IN AUG.......I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT SHER/SHAW OUTSIDE BUSINESS OF CEDAR RUN.......I DO NOT LIVE IN ANY OF THEIR APTS......I LIVE IN CEDAR RUN! I WANT CEDAR RUN BACK! I AM A BIT UPSET THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO POSTING ON THIS BLOG SINCE AUG....AND THE ONES THAT KNOW INFORMATION....ARE DITCHING QUESTIONS.......PLEASE KEEP US INFORMED...

  2. Thanks for your comment. We share your frustration. As for the election, this all depends on the courts. The case involving the election was continued for a date in early December, but there is also another hearing date scheduled for 11/17. We are still trying to find out the details about these two court dates, and wil post something when we learn more.

  3. yes? they are ditching questions and blowing smoke up our ass !unless someone has proof of any wrong doing that is going to remove share/shaw from power your waisting our time and money we the people should have a law suit against both sides its time you all enjoy Mr share he is here to stay spending a lot of time and energy without a dime restoring clubhouse. what happened with the past masterboard they wanted to get another bank loan to do what Mr Robert has done with out a increase in assessment besides he has the Hispanics on his side they do not want john zink to be in power ever again we had enough of that as for alma or apm who had over 15 years to do a better job and keep our cost down inflated our assesments now we are all paying for it Mr Rrobert avoid these negative people they see the value your doing and the want power not to mention the bank account !

BE INFORMED THAT ALL OUR ASSESMENT MONEY THAT WE PAY IS PAYING FOR LAWSUITS.......ALSO...DUE TO THESE LAWSUITS ..NO ONE CAN SELL OR BUY IN CEDAR RUN DUE TO MOST BANKS WILL NOT GIVE LOANS TO BUYERS AND MR.SHER WILL NOT GIVE SELLERS NEEDED FINANCIAL PAPERS..SUCH AS IF THEY ARE CURRENT ON THEIR ASSESMENTS AND BUDGET REPORTS FOR THE MASTERBOARD.......ALSO....MR SHER HAS HAD WORK DONE TO THE CLUBHOUSE WITHOUT PERMITS.....FINALLY THE VILLAGE OF WHEELING PUT A STOP TO IT.....TILL HE GOT THEM!   5. Sorry for the delays. Haven't gotten any details yet. From the court docket, it appears nothing significant happened, and everything will be in front of the judge on December 9th. There are two parts to this case....one is Sher's suit against the old board. The other is the election issue with Sher's board. Will post new info when abailable.

  6. What is the exact suit against the old board? Also....is Sher and Company allowed to take down signs on Cedar Run Drive? There are 2 of them sitting inside the pool area....up against the back fence....A speed limit sign ( believe it is the one that was posted as you pulled into Cedar Run) and A Duck Crossing one.....and if not who can call...The Police?

    1. Lawsuit against the old board began as allegations of theft, embezzlement, fraud, and conflicts of interest. It was thrown out by the judge because no evidence was presented and Sher never specified who was being accused of what. Since then (this began in August of 2012), Sher has tried to 'amend the complaint' and go after the old board with slightly different allegations. So far, there have been three of these amended complaints....all eventually thrown out by the judge. It appears that Sher is throwing anything he can at the wall and hoping something will eventually stick. More on this in a future blog post. It's a bit too long-winded for the comments section of the blog.

      Regarding signage on Cedar Run Drive.......anything like this (or any other shady practices by the Sher group) can be reported to the Village of Wheeling via their code enforcement hotline (847) 459-CODE (2633). You can leave an anonymous tip or complaint, or you can leave your name and number. They WILL CALL BACK and let you know what they are doing about it. If it's something the have no jurisdiction over, they will also let you know.

    2. LMAO......just herd Jack Shaw is in trouble due to a investigative report done by Channel 7..for bad rental/leasing practices....Can someone look into if we can add Poor management of Cedar Run to that?

      Another interesting tidbit is that Anne Shaw is running for Alderman in Chicago's first ward. A political action group that opposes her put together a website to smear her: http://www.shawscams.com

      A fair amount of the info on this site are factually incorrect (like saying that Jack Shaw is her brother) or spun in a misleading way......similar to the early letters we got from Robert Sher. Poetic justice? Perhaps. Either way, the Shaw family's business practices may finally be coming back to bite them.

      Anne Shaw is running for an Alderman seat in Chicago's first ward. A website was setup (presumably by political opponents) to smear her. My Place Apartments is a central theme on this site. The website shows that a class-action lawsuit has recently been filed against Jack Shaw's business, and it also shows evidence that many consumers have filed complaints with the Attorney General.

      Residents from Anne's ward have been using a discussion forum called everyblock to discuss their Alderman candidates. One of these forums goes into great details about Anne Shaw's practices to defend her relative, including her involvement in Cedar Run. They actually link to this blog more than once.

      While none of this relates directly to Cedar Run, it does speak volumes about the Sher/Shaw group and how their deceitful, unlawful practices in Cedar Run are merely a reflection of their everyday business practices.

      Will Anne suffer a political toll for her vehement defense of Robert & Jacks predatory practices? We will find out after tomorrow's Chicago elections.

  7. jack shaw is a good honest hard working man helping Robert rebuild cedar run from the past masterboard john zink caused this mess and now that jack and Robert are making it better for us the old masterboard is causing the law suits not jack or Robert as channel 7 you have to prove or have evidence to arrest him and charge him so what ever you heard is hearsay keep up the great effort restoring cedar run jack and Robert you guys'' happy holidays ''

    1. Thank you for your comment. All viewpoints are welcome here. However you may want to vette your information a bit better regarding the current lawsuits facing Cedar Run.

      There are multiple suits right now involving Cedar Run. A few of them involve vendors or contractors that Sher has refused to pay or breach of contract. The two most important lawsuits faving Cedar Run right now are the lawsuit with the banks and the lawsuit that is now focusing on elections.

      The cause of the bank case (which is the most costly by far) is pretty clear.....Sher instructed (aruably strong-armed) homeowners into paying all their assessments to the HOC immediately after he took power. This cause Phase delinquencies to skyrocket and jeaopardized (and led to outright default for some phases) the loan payment. The banks took legal action and got a court order to stop it. That was almost two years ago and Sher refuses to back down and put this lawsuit to bed. To absolve Sher of any responsibility for this is simply ignorant.

      As for the suit regarding elections.....this is actually a Counter-claim from a lawsuit that Sher has filed against the old board...which has gone nowhere. With his refusal to drop this suit and two consecutive years with a board that does anything Sher wants and no elections to give us the option of replacing them....the countersuit was inevitable.

      We will not further comment on Sher/Shaw's business practices other than to say that their record does not show a history of honest business practices. This abc 7 report just confirms what many consumers have alleged after dealing with their business.

      Sher and Shaw's record in Cedar Run have certainly not been a model for honesty and fairplay either, as they barrage us with lies and finger pointing, all while hoping that a few parties at the clubhouse will keep us from questioning anything they do. All while being paid handsomely, which they necer would admit until we posted check images on THIS BLOG.

      Nonetheless, we appreciate your comment. You have a right to your opinion. You have a right to say that you are pleased with Sher. You have a right to NOT care about all the nitty gritty legal issues. But we recommend that you look for objective evidence regarding these lawsuits. Don't take Sher's word for face value....don't even take our word for it. Educate yourself and think critically, and you will clearly understand why Cedar Run is embroiled in lawsuits.
